www.brevard.edu/clarion Volume 78, Issue 7 Web Edition SERVING BREVARD COLLEGE SINCE 1935 f20l2 Oct. 12, 2012 Helmets off, back to work President Joyce recounts his experience riding Cycle North Carolina By Erica Zaveta StaffWritei^^ Brevard College President David Joyce recounts his experience raising awareness and funds for Brevard College while participating in Cycle NC’s 450-mile bike ride from Brevard to Carolina Beach held from September 29 to October 6. Brevard College trustee Phillip Jerome suggested on a bit of a whim that it would be great if himself, President Joyce and Lynne Joyce all took part in Cycle NC and promoted Brevard College. Cycle NC began in 1999 and has an annual spring and fall ride. Each year the route of this ride is varied and has included historic sites such as the Biltmore Estate and scenic views such as the Blue Ridge Parkway; President Joyce found it serendipitous that the start of this year’s Cycle NC began right here in Brevard on the Brevard College’s campus. This “whim” was a great adventure for President Joyce, Mrs. Joyce, and Mr. Jerome, and a very successful endeavor to say the least. Through their efforts. President Joyce, Lynne Joyce, and Phillip Jerome raised $30,000 from about 30 different sponsors. Each sponsor pledged an amount of money per mile they rode, ranging from 10 cents to 20 dollars. Sponsorship came from faculty and staff of Brevard College, as well as board members, trustees, and friends from other colleges. Coming from an athletic background. President Joyce played soccer in college and has ran marathons, but twenty years ago he found cycling and soon became an avid mountain biker, racing and riding competitively. His wife Lynne, who previously coached Union College’s mountain bike program, is equally competitive on the bike. Their training for this 450 mile trip was just their usual routine of shredding the local mountain bike trail systems. After the first two days, President Joyce found his “road cycling legs” and averaged about 16-17 mph (including stops); he and his wife learned the art of pace line. A pace line is where road cyclist use the draft created by the cyclist in front to limit wind resistance and therefore decrease the amount of energy used by those who are riding in the draft of the cyclist in front of them. President Joyce, being new to riding in a pace line found the vigilance and focus required mentally tiring. President Joyce found people to be the best part of his experience riding 450 miles across North Carolina. He met a wide range of people from all over the state and of all different backgrounds. Seeing the towns by bike gave President Joyce a unique and personal perspective. President Joyce recalls specifically an economically stressed town, small in number of residents, a once prosperous manufacturing town, called Maxton. The residents created an improvised rest stop for the cyclists on the Cycle NC. What stood out most to President Joyce was the generosity and pride that the residents of this town showed. This trip was both challenging and exciting, offering a chance to meet many new people and raise awareness and funds for Brevard College. After this busy trip President Joyce and his wife Lynn will find some R&R, where else but on the trails!
